Movies and TV

I am not a great writer (as evidenced by some of my blog entries) but that doesn't stop me from trying! I do enjoy writing to an extent and will toy around with stories and different ideas from time to time.

Chasing Youth

Chasing Youth was a fun little script I wrote that was meant to be a feel-good comedy set in the vein of movies like "Freaky Friday" and "18 Again". However, there is something novel about my pitch in the visual gag of having children voice acted by adults. In other words the kids wouldn't just act older they would actually sound older. (This about the E-trade ads) Could be pretty funny - if it was well written. :)

The following is an excerpt from the larger document Chasing Youth by Michael P. Malone.

Synopsis: Griffin and Elizabeth Roberts have lived full lives in their small home town of Richfield. They have been very happy together and are deeply in love, but Griffin has always had the specter of failure hanging over him. An Inventor who likes to dream big and build revolutionary contraptions has had most of his dreams end in failure.

Now the local Richfield bank has been robbed and Griffin, using his latest experimental contraption, has inadvertently turned himself and his loving wife, Elizabeth, into children!

This mad capped adventure pits two kids against the bank robbers and an unforgiving land lord who is about to evict them. Will they be able to retrieve the parts for the broken machine and be able to turn themselves back into adults before being captured by the Police, evicted by the Land Lord or worse yet, run down by the Bank Robbers?

Chasing Youth is basically a fun story in the vein of family movies such as ‘Freaky Friday’, ‘Honey I shrunk the Kids’ and ‘Home Alone’. While it is filled with elements of action and adventure its’ unique hook and main comedic components come in the form of two children acting like retirees. Although they’ve accidentally turned themselves into children, they still have the minds and voices of 70 year old adults.

Set up: Griffin and Elizabeth have accidentally turned themselves into children. The bank robbers and cops are chasing them and, though they have the part needed to fix the machine, they need to get back to the lab before being caught.

NOTE: SCREENPLAY STYLE FORMATTING WILL BREAK ON MOBILE DEVICES. BEST VIEWED IN A DESKTOP.

Griffin and Elizabeth are now fully determined to head back to the lab to fix The Reciprocator when they walk past a TV repair shop. There are many TV’s in the display window. They are all showing the news of the day.

Griffin stops.
Griffin
Hey. Wait. Look at this.

The two stop and are staring in the display window.
TV
The latest reports are that the three bank robbers are still at large. They are believed to be armed and dangerous and still in the Hapersville area. First National Bank has offered a $500,000 thousand dollar reward for any information that will lead to the apprehension of these suspects…
Griffin
(turning to Elizabeth)Oh my, $500,000 dollars!?!?

He leans over closer and begins whispering.
Griffin
(mock-singing like ‘come out, come out wherever you are’ in hide and seek)And we know were they are.

Suddenly, Elizabeth now seems distant; she is staring at her reflection in the window.

The reflection of a child.
Griffin
Elizabeth?

(no response)

Elizabeth? What’s wrong?
Elizabeth
Phew, nothing. Being young is just sooo tiring.
Griffin
I’ve known my gal long enough to know when something’s wrong. What is it? Spill the beans.

Elizabeth Sits down on the curb and starts to cry. Griffin sits next to her.

She looks at Griffin trembling. Her eyes begin to well with tears.
Griffin
Talk to me honey. Tell me what’s going on. I can’t help if you won’t talk to me.
Elizabeth
Oh Griffin, I can’t take it anymore. What are we doing? This is all wrong.
Griffin
I’ll fix it Liza. I will. I’ll make this right.
Elizabeth
But what if you can’t? What if we can’t get ourselves back and we’re just lost. Sure, it’s great to be young again, but there’s nothing here for us, no friends or parents to take care of us. What if we’re just lost here?

I’m losing faith Griffin. I’m losing faith in you. IN us, in who we are. (pause) In EVERYTHING. You always say ‘our ship will come in’, but where is it? We always seem to be left standing on the shore, searching the horizons for hope. And sometimes… I just think that ship’s not coming anymore.

(continues)
We’re about to be kicked out of our apartment. We’ve barely got any money and I’m almost 70…
Griffin
(trying to lighten her mood)
70 huh? But you still look great. (he winks)
Elizabeth
I’m serious, Griffin. Dead serious. I don’t know how much more I can take. All of the failures. All of the craziness. All of the nights watching your supper get cold as you throw yourself into another hair brained scheme. This SNAFU is just the latest escapade. I told you I was scared. I told you not to use that machine, but you did. I can’t… (starts to weep) I can’t believe you’ve done this to us.

She starts to sob heavily and he cradles her head.
Griffin
I know, honey. I know. I know. I know… It’s my fault, all my fault. Our lives and where we are is my fault. I know what I’ve sacrificed chasing my dreams and I know that I usually end up tripping over my own feet. Lord, I know it every morning I wake and look into the mirror, but I’ve always felt that I need to act on these dreams because if I sat back and did nothing… than I would BE nothing. (pleading) Can’t you see this? These ideas, these grand ideas, I sometimes think they can move mountains. I just… (pause) haven’t found the right mountain to move yet, I guess. I want to fly and dream and live and move mountains…for us, Liza…US. Not for me alone or for the fame and recognition…but for us. I want to be able to live a nice life with the woman I love. Is that too much too ask? That’s all I ever wanted. It’s all that I know how to do…it’s… all that I am.

(Pause)

Please… keep the faith; you’re my life and my angel.
I know I’ve failed many times. But I will not fail you.

He props up her head and looks deeply into her eyes.

(continues)
I will make this right. I swear to you I will make this right. I love you. I love you too much to ever leave you stranded…on any shore.

Uh oh.

Griffin raises his eyes to see a police car pulling up to the curb. It is officer McDonald.

He jumps out of the car and is headed directly for them.
Officer Mcdonald
You two! I want to talk to you two!! I see we’ve, at least, finally, gotten ourselves dressed today.
Elizabeth
Yes officer. (trying to smile and look innocent) What seems to be the problem, Sir?

Elizabeth and Griffin take a step back as the officer approachs them. He continues toward them.
Officer McDonald
Don’t try to butter me up, you little hooligans. First, you’re playing hooky from school. Now Victor Santiago has reported you as breaking into and vandalizing some of his property.

Elizabeth glances down and sees that Griffin is pointing, signaling to her to run. She gives him a look of ‘why’.
Officer Mcdonald
We’re going down to the station. We’ll call your parents and get to the bottom of this behavior.

He reaches out to grab the two and his walkie talkie starts to crackle.
Walkie Talkie
<hiss> Officer Mcdonald. Report situation…

McDonald looks to reach for his radio and the two immediately take off; running as fast as they can.

McDonald picks up his radio.
Officer McDonald
This is McDonald, (running back to his car) currently in pursuit. I’m going to have to chase them down.

He jumps in his car and speeds away from the curb.

Cut to:

Griffin and Elizabeth are running down the street and turn into an alley.

Their feet pound the pavement; they are running at full speed. They have the transducer and the power it holds to make everything right again.
Elizabeth
(panting)
Why…are…we running?
Griffin
Do you want to spend the night in jail?…Obviously they’ll never find our parents…God knows (pant) where we would end up then. Probably an orphanage or some nonsense!

The two turn another corner trying to disappear into another small alley.

Hitting full stride, they jump up to reach a fire escape ladder and quickly climb up to the first level of the fire escape.

They immediately duck down and then lay flat, staying completely motionless.

At that moment, Officer McDonald comes around the corner into the alley in his patrol car.

He is cruising the alleyway very slowly, searching the dimly lit nooks and crannies of the passage for any sign of them.

The two lay very flat and hold their breath as he passes by underneath them.

They watch, anxiously, as the police car approaches the end of the alley, pulls out and turns right onto the next block.

Cut to:

Int.-The Van

Clyde, Smits, and Petey are riding in the van also searching for any sign of the kids.

They see the police car pull out of the alley.
Clyde
Holy Crap! Slow down! Cops! Look at ‘em, (pointing) right there. Whoa Petey easy now, go real slow. Don’t want to bring any undo attention to us.
Smits
Wonder what they’re looking for down there…
Clyde
Don’t know. But let’s just keep our distance. Pull down this next alley. We’ll lay low for a while. Keep your eyes peeled for those brats.

The van pulls down the alley.

Cut to:

Ext. Fire Escape- Daytime

Griffin and Elizabeth are climbing down from the ladder. Elizabeth is already on the ground, when Griffin jumps off the ladder.
Griffin
Wow, that was close.
Elizabeth
Griffin, enough. Let’s get home or back to the lab or where ever we’re going and put the part in and turn ourselves back into normal people. C’mon. NOW. Let’s go.
Griffin
I’m with you, babe. It’s been a long day and we’ve got a lot to figure out.

Griffin and Elizabeth don’t see the work van menacingly idling around the corner behind them.

Cut to:

Int. Work Van

The three are looking out the windshield and see Griffin and Elizabeth; distant figures in the alley walking away from them.

Clyde
Well, look at this. The little pukes…in the flesh.

(continues)
Petey, punch it! Run ‘em down!

Petey revs the engine and launches the van down the alley.

Elizabeth and Griffin look up.
Elizabeth
Oh My God! It’s the van!!! Run Griffin!! RUN!!!!!

Griffin and Elizabeth start to run as fast as they can.

The alley is barely wide enough to accommodate the speeding van. Its’ mirrors scrape the walls and wooden door frames as it continues to pick up speed.
Elizabeth
Ohhh nooo. Griffin, I can’t run any faster. Please. This can’t be it…

The van’s bumper closes to within inches of Griffin and Elizabeth when they jump up onto a loading dock just as the speeding van whizzes past.

Petey jams on the van’s breaks and it screeches to a stop by hitting a bunch of garbage cans and becomes mired in the refuse.

The van begins to spin its tires in the garbage and debris and, after some lurching and chirping, backs out of the rubbish pile.

Cut to:

Int. Van

Clyde is staring at Petey like he’s going to kill him.
Petey
What?
Clyde
What? Is that all you can say… what?
Smits
Uh no Boss no. I’ve heard ‘em say a lot more than that…A LOT…

Clyde grabs Smit’s face around the cheeks pinching his lips together.
Clyde
(growling) Please….just…shut…up.

They jump out of the van and look to the loading dock. It is empty.

Clyde
GREAT! JUST FLIPPING GREAT!!! Bozo the clown and Mr. Rocket scientist have down it again!
Petey
Hey, we weren’t the ones
Who…
Clyde
SHH. SHHH. Ok, here’s what we’re going to do. You wait here and try not to screw anything up. Can you guys do that? Can you just wait here?

They both nod.

Clyde
I will go in there and flush them out. When they come out, you two grab them. Do you think you can do that? Do you think you can grab two 9 year olds?
Smits
Ah yeah, sure boss, we’ll get them.
Petey
(saluting)You can count on us.

Clyde rolls his eyes and begins to walk towards the old warehouse.

Cut to:

Int. Warehouse-Late Afternoon

Griffin and Elizabeth have found a small space to hide; under an old platform. Griffin is wriggling in over a slotted grate. He hears the distinct clink of metal.

Griffin
Oh boy. Oh no (feeling his pockets)
Elizabeth
What?
Griffin
I dropped it. I dropped the transducer.
Elizabeth
I told you not to wear those old man clothes. Where is it?
Griffin
Down there.

He points down and they look down. The transducer is at the bottom of a small shaft with a heavy iron grate over it. The grate is much too heavy to lift.

They hear Clyde in the distance.

Clyde
Aha! I heard that. You think you can hide. Come out, come out and play. (pause) C’mon! We’ll have fun!!

Desperately trying to stay in the shadows, Griffin and Elizabeth huddle even more closely together.

Elizabeth
(whispering)
What are we going to do? We can’t get down there?

Griffin looks out a small slated ventilation opening. He can see the alleyway and the work van, with its’ back doors open, not more twenty feet away.

Griffin
I think we can. Give me your hand and be quiet.

The two start pulling the mesh off of the opening and forcing open the slats.

Cut to:

Closeup Clyde is creeping around the warehouse intent on finding them.

He jumps up to an old canvas covering and whips it aside.
Clyde
Aha! Gotcha!

It is apparent he has no clue where they are hiding.

Cut to:

Ext. The Alleyway

Smits and Petey are in the foreground while the truck, with it’s open doors, is behind them.

Smits
Nu-uh. Superman would burn him up; he’s got heat ray vision. Heat ray vision can beat anything.

Griffin and Elizabeth sneak across the alley and enter the van behind them.

Cut to:

Int. The van

Griffin and Elizabeth are rifling through canvas bags and boxes inside the van. Smits and Petey can be heard arguing nonsensically in the background.

Griffin fumbles through several bags until he finds the one that contains the dynamite.

Elizabeth
The dynamite!?!? (whispering) Are you out of your cotton-picking mind!?
Griffin
Don’t worry, sweet. I used this junk all the time when I was back in the army.
Elizabeth
You never told me that!
Griffin
I guess you learn something new every day huh? Look for a smaller stick. Not one of the full sticks. Something just big enough to blast off the grate.

Cut to:

Ext. The alley

With the van behind them, Petey and Smits are still just basically staring into space.

Smits
Well, what about Aquaman? He could use his mental powers to call the whales…

Cut to:

Int. The van
Elizabeth
(Pointing to one of the bags)
There?
Griffin
Yeah, hand it here.
Elizabeth
I ain’t touching it.
Griffin
Oh, for pete’s sake, you’re such a nervous nellie.

Griffin grabs the small stick of dynamite.

Griffin
Let’s go.

They start to leave the van.

Griffin
Wait. We need something to light it with.

He looks around the van and sees a striker; the type that is used to light acetylene torches.

Griffin
This will do.

He starts to strike it. It doesn’t work.

Griffin
Dagnabit. I think it’s too old…
Elizabeth
Look who’s talking.
Griffin
Very funny. I don’t think it works…

He strikes it again and gets a spark. It falls from the striker and lands directly on one of the dynamite wicks.

Griffin
Oh yeah it works, GO! NOW!!!

They quickly exit the van and run back across the alleyway.

When they reach the building they jump through the slatted opening into the safety of their hiding spot.

At that moment Clyde comes out of the building.

Clyde
Hey bird brains, ya seen ‘em?
Petey
Nope. Everything is under control boss. We ain’t seen nuttin’.
Smits
Yeah. Told you, you can count on us.

At that moment, the truck explodes in a brilliant fireball knocking them all to the ground.

Clyde jumps to his feet.

Clyde
(screaming)
You blew up the truck!!! YOU BLEW UP THE FREAKING TRUCK!!!! I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU BLEW UP THE TRUCK!!!!!

Smits doesn’t even hear Clyde yelling at him. He is staring wide eyed at the smoldering truck, ecstatic that it has exploded.
Smits
COOOLLLL.

Clyde
(mockingly)’Everything is under control Boss. Everything is cool!’ EVERYTHING IS NOT COOL!!!! YOU BLEW UP THE FREAKING TRUCK!!! TURCK…BOOM…NOT COOL!!! We’ve got to get this thing out of here!! Now!

Cut to:

Int. Officer McDonald’s Patrol car.

Officer McDonald is still patrolling the streets looking for the Bank Robbers and the rogue children.

His radio interrupts the relative silence.

Radio
Calling all cars…Calling all cars, we have reports of an explosion downtown in the alleys behind the Super-rite. All cars please respond: Code 3.

McDonald picks up the receiver.

Officer Mcdonald
This is McDonald…I’m on it!

Cut to:

Int. The Warehouse

Closeup of Griffin placing the dynamite cap on the grate.

He then lights the fuse.

Quickly he backs away and crouches around a corner with Elizabeth.

A few moments later, there is a small explosion followed by a loud, noisy clang as the grate hits the bottom of the empty shaft.

Griffin looks at Elizabeth.

Griffin
I think it worked.

They run down the short hall to see that the grate has fallen into the hole.

Griffin
I’ll get it.

Griffin climbs down into the grate.

He looks around the bottom and has to squint in the dim light. Finally he finds the transducer.

Griffin
I’ve got it!
I’m coming up!

Cut to:

Ext. Town Main Street

Officer McDonald’s car is flying down the road. He is pushing his vehicle hard with lights flashing and siren blaring.

He comes skidding around a corner just as two other patrol cars are coming up the street.

Cut to:

Ext. The alleyway

Griffin and Elizabeth are emerging into the afternoon sunlight from the small ventilation opening.

Griffin
Ok. It looks like they’re gone.

Elizabeth climbs out of the small opening and stands up. She is looking at a big smoking, charred mark on the pavement where the van used to be.

Elizabeth
(mockingly)’I used dynamite in the army.’ I’ll bet you did.
Griffin
Ha. Very funny. Let’s go.

The two begin to walk down the alleyway, when suddenly, Elizabeth collapses. She falls to her knees, Griffin spins around.
Griffin
Liza!!! What is it?
Elizabeth
(weakly) I…I don’t know Griffin. Being young seems to be…wooo…a little too much for me. I’m all of the sudden weak, so weak. I need to just…lie down,

Elizabeth half falls to the pavement.
Griffin
Elizabeth, no! We must keep going. We must get back…they’re still coming!!!

Elizabeth is not listening and growing weaker.
Elizabeth
Griffin? What’s…happening…to me?
Griffin
Oh, no, no ,no. I think it’s the reciprocation process. It’s beginning to break down the structure of your cells. Get up! We need to move! Now!

Elizabeth
I…can’t…I think… I’m dying. I can feel my spirit growing weary.
Griffin
No! Elizabeth! No! Not today, today is not the day. (seriously) You’re too young to die. Ahhh that cursed machine. I now know it’s all my fault. I will get you home. I will fix this. I will!!!
Elizabeth
Griffin, you old fool. It’s not your fault. Those things I said back there were said by a scared woman who really is still just a little girl. I’ve loved every magical moment of my life with you. You’re one of a kind. An original. I only wish I could live every single day with you over again. I love you.

At once Griffin hears the distant warble of police sirens. His head snaps up alertly. He knows he has to get Elizabeth back to the lab immediately. Any delay or entanglement with the police and time will simply run out.

Elizabeth can see the look of alarm on his face.

Elizabeth
(weakly)
Wha…is it?
Griffin
Stay here, stay right here. I WILL be back.

Griffin runs as fast as his feet will carry him.

He tears around the corner, scales one fence easily. He then jumps off on the other side.

He runs down a small passageway and scales another fence.

Cut to:

Ext. Backyard of Boys fixing go-carts- Late Afternoon

The music is playing loudly and the yard is a mess. There are different parts of go-carts and dirt bikes strewn about. The older boy is working on a go-cart and has the engine running. His younGER brother is sitting on a tree stump watching him and eating a sandwich.

Closeup of the younger boy enjoying his peanut butter and fluff sandwich.

As the older boy turns to get a wrench to continue his work, Griffin runs up behind him and jumps into the go-cart.

The music is so loud the older boy doesn’t hear Griffin speeding away in it.

The older boy starts to turn back and stops because the younger boy is just staring with a look of shock on his face.

Older Boy
What’s your problem, buttwipe?

The younger boy just slowly points to where the go-cart was.

The older boy turns to discover his machine is missing and he drops the wrench and stares out of the yard with a look of puzzlement.

Cut to:

Ext. DownTown streets/Back alleyways

Griffin is tearing down the street on the go-cart. The small engine whines as he pushes it to its limits.

Cut to:

Int. Officer Mcdonald’s Car

Officer McDonald is speaking into his radio

Officer Mcdonald
Any sign of anything Reed?
Reed (on Radio)
Nope nothing over here. False report, maybe?

Officer McDonald does a double take and looks up from the radio. He sees Elizabeth sitting on the loading dock at the end of the alley.

He is too far away to discern her weakened condition.
Officer Mcdonald
(to himself)I see we meet again. How did I know you’d be on the end of this call.

Officer McDonald’s cruiser slowly creeps down the alleyway so as to not surprise Elizabeth.

At that moment, he hears the whir of what he thinks is a chainsaw.

At once, Griffin is speeding around the corner on the small Go-Cart
Officer McDonald
What tha?

He sees Griffin speed up to the loading platform, put Elizabeth into the two-seater, and fly off.

He picks up his radio.
Officer Mcdonald
This is McDonald, attention all units. Be on the lookout for two kids in a go-cart.

He flips on his lights and siren and begins chasing the two.

Griffin and Elizabeth are speeding along the sidewalks of downtown. Many of the startled residents have to jump off the sidewalks and out of the way in order to avoid being run down.

The other police cruisers round the corner onto Main Street and join in the chase.

Griffin
Hold on Elizabeth. Hold on, we’re almost there.

Cut to:

Ext. The warehouse district

The crooks are just pulling into their hideout. The entire top half of the van has been blown off and it is still smoldering. Clyde is driving; the van now reaches a top speed of about 3 miles an hour. The wheels are warped from the heat of the explosion and one has completely melted off.

Smits is about 10 feet behind the van on a child’s bicycle ringing the bell. He is far too heavy for it and has warped the wheels on that too.

Smits
Hey wait up…listen to the bell. You know the bell means wait up.

Clyde turns and glares.
Clyde
Shut up.

They enter the warehouse and shut the door.

A few moments later, Petey enters the scene trotting along on foot and starts banging on the door.

Petey
C’mon guys. Let me in.

Cut to:

Ext.-The neighborhood streets

Griffin and Elizabeth have made their way out of the downtown area and are now speeding through the neighborhood streets. All three police cars are now involved in the chase. They go whizzing by an older man checking his mail

Older Man
(waving his fist in the air)
Slow down! Damn kids today!

Griffin and Elizabeth take a short cut through someone’s yard. They run over the grass, smash through a small picket fence, and get caught in a laundry line.

Griffin guides the go-cart back onto the streets and is trying to get untangled from the clothes line.

The police skid around the corner. Though the shortcut has created some separation from their pursuants, they have not lost them.

The police begin to gain on them again.

They enter the warehouse district.

Griffin can now see Officer McDonald’s bumper coming to within inches of the back of the go-cart.

Officer McDonald begins to issue commands over his loud speaker.

Officer McDonald
Alright Kids, the party is over. Pull that thing over.

Officer McDonald backs the Cruiser off again. He is now about eight feet behind them.

They are still traveling at the go-cart’s top speed.

Officer McDonald again ‘charges’ the go-cart with his car. This time, his bumper comes within a few inches of it.

At that moment, Griffin cuts the wheel as hard as he can and launches the go-cart down a small side alley.

Office McDonald and the rest of the police force cannot turn as quickly and overshoot the small roadway. The three of them skid to halt further down the road.

Griffin is holding on for dear life and rapidly approaching the end of the alleyway.

They are approaching an old garage door at an alarming speed.

He pumps on the brakes and nothing happens.

Griffin
Oh MY GOD! I think that kid was trying to fix the brakes!!!

He pumps them again…nothing.

Griffin
Hold on Elizabeth!!!! Hold on!!!!

Cut to:

INt. Bank Robbers Shop area-Daytime

What is left of the van is sitting in the parking area. It is a smoking heap. Clyde, Smits and Petey are busy discussing how to catch the ‘kids’ when Griffin and Elizabeth smash through an old wooden side door on their go-cart. The cart takes out a workbench and the stacks of pigeon cages nearby. The cages fall and the birds become frantic, flying everywhere.

The go cart is covered in debris and dirt and Griffin is pulling stuff off of him and spitting things out of his mouth.

Elizabeth is so weak she is barely conscious in the passenger seat.

Clyde and Smits stop counting their money and are staring at the scene that has developed before them with disbelief
Clyde
What tha…?

Petey is completely distraught over the fact that his pigeons are loose and is jumping and clutching at the air trying to grab them.
Petey
(yelling to the Sky) oh Barry! Elliot! Come back! Haven’t I been good to you?! Come back!

The other two thugs realize the fact that they are the kids and move in closer like vultures.
Clyde
Well, Well, Well. What do we have here?
Smits
Woot! it must be our lucky day boss.
Clyde
That, my friend, is an understatement…
(staring intensely at the two)
It’s almost like Christmas…Someone has sent us a present.

Griffin
(With fear in his eyes) Please buddy! (dropping any pretense of being a child)…Look at her! She’s sick…sh

Clyde grabs Griffin and rips him from the seat; he’s holding him off the ground.
Clyde
Where you been you little punk? Do you know how much trouble you’ve caused us? Do you realize what kind of energy we’ve wasted trying to chase you down…not to mention the risk of being seen by the cops!!

(Continues)

Well boys it looks like it’s our lucky day
Officer McDonald
I wouldn’t say that.

Clyde and the others didn’t see the police, who had been following Griffin; get into their positions around the warehouse.
